Osum Oil Sands is committed to a Zero Harm culture and an incident free work environment. To achieve this, our safety management processes are designed to ensure line management accountability, worker participation and leadership from the executive to the workers in the field. At Osum, nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of its workers employees, contractors and neighbours - our goal is to send everyone home safe every night.
Incidents or undesirable events are visible evidence of systemic deficiencies; if there are incidents, there are problems. Osum Oil Sands focus on our systems from an operational standpoint. The Health and Safety function is an important component of our approach. Our executive and operations management lead this charge. Incidents are the responsibility of leadership not the fault of employees.
The company has implemented systems, processes and policies for performance measurement, risk assessment, contractor management, all to guide our activities and to ensure we continually improve. We have employed a world-class team of managers and specialists with the capability to carefully plan and execute all business-related work safely and effectively.
We are currently designing a Total Loss Management (TLM) system that contains 10 elements for building a safe workplace and creating a strong safety culture:
Osum Oil Sands leadership are responsible to promote a safe workplace by being engaged in the Total Loss Management process, active in the field, creating a "facts not fault" culture, and by setting a good example. Osum strives to create an environment where it's possible for anyone to raise safety concerns, and to ensure line management follow up to address these safety concerns.
At Osum Oil Sands, nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of its workers employees, contractors and neighbours - our goal is to send everyone home safe every night. Osum Oil Sands has developed Health and Safety Management systems that guide the planning and safe execution of our work activities, and assess our worksites for unsafe or unhealthy conditions.
Osum Oil Sands has developed processes that enhance safety in facility engineering and design, procurement, construction execution, commissioning, start-up, operations and decommissioning, all to ensure the safety and reliability of our existing, and future facilities and assets throughout their entire life cycle.
Osum Oil Sands utilize contractors to supply services, or commodities, to our facilities, and work sites. Contractors who work on our sites can put personnel, equipment and assets at risk.
Osum Oil Sands uses a subcontractor management process to guide the planning, expectations, selection, mobilization, and monitoring of contractors who work on our behalf. We analyze contractor performance to learn and improve. Our expectation is that contractors will perform to the same zero harm expectations as our own employees.
Osum Oil Sands employs environmental professionals responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining environmental management systems and controls that identify, assess, monitor, and reduce the impact of our operations on the environment. We promote environmental stewardship, regulatory compliance at all sites across the company.
Osum Oil Sands is responsible for providing workers with a safe and healthy work environment and for ensuring they have the skills and knowledge required to do their jobs. This is done by identifying and documenting the requirements of each employee’s role, setting expectations, managing and evaluating performance, and applying appropriate recognition and reinforcement of desired behaviours.
Osum Oil Sands will regularly assess performance to evaluate progress against our requirements, targets, and objectives, and to establish baselines for continuous improvement. Osum Oil Sands will conduct reviews of each assessment and will assign action to ensure and verify the current standards and controls in place.
Effective stakeholder relations are a key component of corporate responsibility. It is necessary to promote effective relations, and dialogue, with neighbouring communities, landowners, indigenous or aboriginal peoples, regulators, governments, non-governmental organizations, other industries, oil and gas operators, business partners, and other stakeholders who have an interest in Osum Oil Sands operations or development projects. We use a proactive approach to ensure a principled relationship with all our relevant stakeholders.
Security Management, Emergency Preparedness, and Crisis Management processes are intended to provide a means for our facilities to identify security risks, specific undesirable emergency scenarios, and develop response and communications plans to prevent and mitigate their occurrence, and prevent their recurrence.
By investigating incidents we learn how and why they occurred so action can be taken to prevent recurrence. The purpose of incident investigation is to identify ways to improve our operations to find facts, not to place blame or establish legal liability. Incident investigations are reviewed by the Health and safety staff so trends can be identified and lessons learned can be shared with other plants. Osum Oil Sands has developed requirements for the reporting, notification and investigation of events and hazards, analyzing the trends, implementing corrective actions and sharing the learning’s to prevent recurrence and continually improve our operations.
