Osum Celebrates Literacy with Book Readings and Word Games

As part of Osum’s commitment to education, we are an enthusiastic supporter of literacy initiatives in our operating areas. On January 23rd, the Osum Blue Crew had the pleasure of volunteering at a Calgary Reads Reading Rally, hosted at Richmond School.

CEO Steve Spence gave a spirited reading of The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires, followed by Richmond School teachers acting out the story of a wizard, a fairy and a magic chicken. To wrap up the afternoon, small groups of grade one and two students were paired with Blue Crew volunteers to experience the joy of reading together.

Osum also sponsors the Cold Lake Festival of Words, hosted annually by the Cold Lake Community Learning Centre. This event gives children and their families the chance to participate in reading and literacy games while teaching important skills.

The theme of the 2020 event on January 25th was Under the Sea, and kids were encouraged to dress up as their favourite sea creatures and celebrate Family Literacy Day. With nearly 300 people attending the event, the day was another great success! Osum created and distributed a “Get Hooked on Words” workbook with word searches, fill-in-the-blanks and a story prompt. This interactive and entertaining booklet is available for download HERE.

Literacy is a key element of children’s development. Reading with children helps them discover new worlds, fires their imaginations and creates opportunities for further learning – a goal Osum is proud to support with Calgary Reads and Cold Lake Festival of Words.
